We’ll do one of these for every practice throughout training camp. Feel free to use this thread to share your own observations from training camp, as well.

Training Camp Report: Watt Lights It Up

Chris Watt was extremely impressive on the first day of training camp. Also, see what Danny Woodhead had to say about his return and learn what undrafted rookie turned heads. Read More…

I asked thrill to answer this on the old forum, and I’ll ask the same of anyone here watching these initial practices.  Since they are currently practicing without pads, can you describe in detail what the act of “blocking” means and entails right now?  Thanks.

It’s nothing more than engaging at this point. The coaches are just looking to make sure the players are exhibiting good footwork and proper hand placement. Once the players tie up, there is no more physicality or struggle. Basically, it’s like the blocking you see on extra points.

Training Camp Report: Bitter-Sweet Practice

The defense brings the heat; Mike Scifres brings his booming kicks; and Melvin Gordon’s mom brings some critiques in our second training camp practice report. Read More…

Good to see one of my personal favorites, Richard Crawford, acquitting himself well.

Training Camp Practice Report: Day Three Gets Physical

The Chargers went though the first full-pads practice of training camp on Saturday, putting on a show for a packed house that included LaDainian Tomlinson. Read More…

The quote of the day goes to Jacoby Jones: “It’s gonna be tough to make this team.” That’s especially true at receiver, where the competition behind the Big Four (Keenan Allen, Malcom Floyd, Stevie Johnson and Dontrelle Inman) picked up a notch on Saturday.

Training Camp Practice Report: Rested and Tested

A rookie receiver turns heads; a familiar problem arises on the offensive line; and the team suffers its first significant injury of the new season. Read More…

Realistically, no rookie receiver is going to make this roster. However, if Demetrius Wilson can earn a spot on the practice squad and keep putting in work, he could take over Malcom Floyd’s spot on the roster in 2016.

I have to ask.  Why was the impression you guys had about this kid so far off from what the team obviously had, seeing as how they released him today when they signed Mabin?  I mean, we’re talking about 90 players out there right now, and Wilson was the guy they jettisoned.  So why do you think there was such a big disconnect between what you guys saw, and what the team did?

And to be clear, I’m not trying to be a jerk here.  I’m truly curious, since I’m not there to see any of these practices.

A couple things on that:

1) We only see what the players do on the practice field. We don’t see how  they do in the film room, in the clubhouse, etc.

2) Jody’s report only reflects her opinion of his play during the first couple days of training camp. When the team makes roster moves like this, they are factoring in Wilson’s entire body of work dating back to the first day he signed.

But if you’d like to ask Jody more about it, tweet her @RealJodyTaylor or hit her up here on the message boards under the user name Jody.

Training Camp Practice Report: Changing of the Guard

The interior offensive line experiments with a new look; Melvin Ingram looks super human; and Eric Weddle goes through the motions. Read More…

It looks like the Chargers are considering fixing their leaky right guard position by using the following offensive line alignment: LT King Dunlap, LG Orlando Franklin, C Trevor Robinson, OG Chris Watt and RT D.J. Fluker. Robinson has been the starting center for most of the past few practices and has acquitted himself extremely well.

I like Robinson at center. He’s looked good in camp, and I was surprised when the Bengals got rid of him. But I think Watt was only playing guard in place of Orlando Franklin, who missed that practice.

It looks like the Bolts are already working with another starting lineup: Dunlap-Franklin-Watt-Fluker-Barksdale

This is probably the “preferred” line for fans, and they have been able to run the ball very affectively on Saturday using this configuration, but at this point, you have to wonder if McCoy is just experimenting with different lines for players to get reps at different positions.

Training Camp Practice Report: Fandemonium

With strong performances from Philip Rivers, Eric Weddle, Keenan Allen and others, the Chargers put on quite a show during their annual Fan Fest at Qualcomm Stadium. Read More…

Hopefully Jody didn’t just jinx Javontee Herndon the same way she did Demetrius Wilson!

Training Camp Practice Report: Motivation Monday

It was a good day for Philip Rivers and the offense, while the defensive line has a long ways to go before Thursday’s showdown with the Cowboys. Read More…

I’ve been saying this for a long time now: Corey Liuget cannot do it alone. Hopefully, sixth-round pick Darius Philon can continue his rapid ascension and emerge as a contributor sooner than expected.

Training Camp Practice Report: Beat the Heat

Monday’s practice featured high temperatures and low fan attendance. But while veterans took it lightly, Mitch Unrein, Javontee Herndon and Jeremiah Sirles never got that memo. Read More…

The right side of D.J. Fluker and Joe Barksdale really worries me in pass protection. Also, I’ve always preferred Fluker at tackle, so long as he can be paired with a guard who has good lateral quickness and can help out in pass protection. While there are not a lot of great options for that role currently on the roster, I think Kenny Wiggins and Craig Watts could both be worth an extended look in that capacity should Mike McCoy & Co. decide to kick Fluker back outside.
