I remember watching this video before the draft and being intrigued. Now that he’s on the team…I am really excited to see this guy hit the field. Reminds me a lot of Vincent Jackson. He was also an extremely raw prospect with great size and speed.

I came away with the same comparison! The guy is incredibly smooth for a receiver of his size, with deep speed to spare. One of our new reporters (her name is Brie, her first article runs next week) spoke with one of the Western Oregon coaches today for a feature we are doing on Williams. I believe she is slated to interview Williams himself at some point next week, as well. I’ll link those articles here as soon as they go live.

As promised, here is Brie’s interview with Western Oregon head coach Arne Ferguson. An interview with Williams will be coming down the pike shortly.

Sounds like Williams has solid character and work ethic. That’s a great sign because he’s going to have a lot of work to do in order to grab a roster spot. Right now, there are 11 WRs on the roster and I’d say the top 5 are set between:

K. Allen

M. Floyd

S. Johnson

D. Inman

J. Jones

So, that leaves 6 guys vying for 1 potential 6th spot. Going to be tough…but right now, I think he has a higher ceiling than any of the other 6 guys.

Doing a Side by side against VJ, this Kid is Faster, can Jump as High, Which was One of VJ’s Greatest Attributes, Going up and

Getting the Ball, he is about 20 lbs lighter?, But with the 6’4″ frame, leaping Ability, and 4.38 speed, I’m a little excited,

Now, can he run Routes? I guess with that speed, Run Straight, Forrest!

BTW, the Alvin Harper Comparison? For you kids out there that were born before the Cold War? LOL

Haha, I thought the Alvin Harper comparison was a very good one! Harper had awesome leaping ability…..he just didn’t pan out too well outside of Dallas.

From the UT:

4) Catch of the day: undrafted Tyrell Williams, a receiver from Western Oregon whose size and movements recall undrafted Malcom Floyd of Wyoming, snatched a deep-in pass.

Williams’ Mission: ‘Make an impact on every play’

We talk with rookie receiver Tyrell Williams about why he chose to sign with the Chargers and what he’s looking forward to most as training camp approaches. Read More…

Here is the interview with Williams, as promised. We at SDBR have been making the same Malcom Floyd comparisons mentioned above. With Floyd entering the final year of his contract (and likely his final season in the NFL), the Chargers may be able to stash Williams on the practice squad for a season and then move him into Floyd’s place in 2016.
