The leap from the NCAA to the NFL is dramatic and daunting, especially for players coming from small schools rather than traditional “football factories.”

One way many pro teams help these players adjust is by bringing one of their college teammates along for the ride. In fact, it’s a tactic the Chargers have used every year under Tom Telesco’s leadership.

In 2015, the Chargers paired sixth-round pick Darius Philon with Arkansas teammate Demetrious Wilson. In 2014, Telesco drafted Marion Grice before adding Arizona State teammate Alden Darby. In 2013, Telesco spent consecutive draft picks on Cal products Keenan Allen and Steve Williams.
